(Washington, DC) - On Saturday afternoon, Congressman Baron Hill presented New Albany resident and World War II and Korean War veteran Howard Cloninger with the Bronze Star Medal.   Cloninger was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his service during the Korean War. 

“I’m honored to be able to present Mr. Cloninger with this medal,” Hill said at the presentation Saturday.  “And, I’m thankful and grateful for all Mr. Cloninger did to protect and defend our great nation.” 

Howard Cloninger served in the Army as a tank gunner in a tank platoon.  He served in Usan, Korea and on November 1, 1950, his platoon was assigned to cover a group tasked with destroying a bridge, as well as to provide cover for fellow soldiers withdrawing. Twice during fire that evening, Howard left the safety of his tank to assist with loading injured soldiers into the tank.

In 2000, Hill was able to secure 10 other medals for Cloninger.
