(Washington, DC) - Today the U.S. House of Representatives considered H.R. 1145, the National Water Research and Development Initiative Act. Congressman Baron Hill supported this important piece of legislation.
The bill coordinates national research and development efforts on water and provides a clear path forward to ensure adequate water supplies for generations to come. In addition, H.R. 1145 streamlines our national water strategy, will use federal research and development dollars efficiently, and eliminates redundant programs.
“Not only is this a critical public health issue, but, it’s a critical economic development issue,” Hill said. “In order to attract new businesses and retain current ones, our Southern Indiana towns and cities must have a steady water supply and effective water infrastructure.”
Currently more than 20 federal agencies carry out research and development on some aspect of water supply, water quality or water management. H.R. 1145 consolidates those resources and requires the President to establish an interagency committee to implement a National Water Research and Development Initiative.
H.R. 1145 passed by a vote of 412 to 10 this afternoon.
