(Washington, DC) - Last June, President Bush signed the new GI Bill for the 21st Century into law. Under this legislation, which Congressman Baron Hill supported, qualified veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars will have access to full, four-year college scholarships. As of May 1, 2009, the Veterans Administration (VA) has begun processing applications for certifications of eligibility for the enhanced benefits.
“The new GI Bill is a significant step forward in our effort to honor the men and women who courageously serve our nation,” Hill said. “I was proud to support legislation that provides our returning veterans the chance to attend college and succeed when they come home. And, I’m pleased this legislation is really starting to take shape.”
The VA has set up a website with detailed information on the new GI Bill, http://www.gibill.va.gov/. In addition, Hill encourages those with questions or concerns about these benefits to call his Bloomington office, 812-336-3000.
Eligible veterans should sign up as soon as possible since they will be able to access the new benefits beginning August 1, 2009. In addition, the new GI Bill allows veterans to transfer those benefits to family members.
