Hill Votes to Defund ACORN
Motion to recommit would sever federal government’s ties with the organization

(Washington, DC) - Congressman Baron Hill voted to prohibit federal funds to be awarded to the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) today.  This language was included in a motion to recommit to H.R. 3221, the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act, and was passed by an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote of 345 to 75.  Because the motion was adopted, the language is now included in H.R. 3221 as passed by the U.S. House of Representatives.

The motion to recommit, offered by Congressman Darrell Issa (R-CA), places a prohibition on federal funds to ACORN.  This prohibition includes federal contracts, grants, cooperative agreements, or any other form of agreement.

“I appreciate the swift action taken by the House on this issue,” Hill said.  “I have heard from many constituents who are understandably upset about ACORN’s inappropriate conduct.  This matter merits further review.  And, until then, I believe cutting off federal funding is an appropriate course of action.”
