(Washington, DC) - The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has stated their decision to deny Governor Mitch Daniels’ request for a Major Disaster Declaration in a letter to the Governor. Last week, Congressman Baron Hill led the effort among Indiana’s congressional delegation supporting the Governor’s request for a Major Disaster Area Declaration for the State of Indiana and Hazard Mitigation statewide as a result of the severe storms and flooding that occurred on August 4 through August 9, 2009. In response to FEMA’s decision, Hill issued the following statement:
“Every day I am getting more and more calls from constituents and public officials about the damage that was done to Southern Indiana communities during and after the severe storms in early August. These calls only reaffirm that I believe FEMA should reconsider its decision.
Recent heavy and sustained rainfall in Indiana has also compounded the situation for many Southern Indiana residents. Hoosiers are known for their work ethic and generous spirit, but during times like this, we need some additional assistance.
The Governor’s office is already working on an appeal regarding FEMA’s decision, and I will certainly do all I can to support that request and get this decision reversed.”
